Back in 1979 I had this dream that I was looking at a wall of graffiti. For the most part they were the primitive marble rattlings of the de-evolved. Amidst all the spray canned symbols of hate and death was also this, as an apparent answer: All that exists are symbols. Every circumstance is an allegory, every life a parable, every fact a metaphor, every incident is a co-incidence. Every letter, every word, every sentence is a symbol of something that is itself a symbol. There is nothing left but symbols.

They are the flags of our cowardice, the cornerstone of our mediocrity. But they are all we that we have left with which to touch one another. (oil on canvas 1980)
