Protect & Serve

Protect & Serve (18 x 24)
Back in the mid 70’s I painted an oil painting of the police at a donut shop, It is from a larger series entitled “ The L.A. Series”. The painting depicts some 16 police cars, and a few police officers in the parking lot of a Winchells Donut House. This painting has become a rather famous one, over the past 27 years, this painting has gained an appreciation with police officers, and the public from coast to coast. Beyond the lighthearted approach, the painting, has come to represent the period in which it was created. A more innocent time, a time before drive by shootings, and roving gangs of murderous thugs.

I use to have a friend who lived behind a Winchells Donut house in Reseda California. Every time I would go over for a visit, I would have to drive right by the donut shop. It was kind of a surreal scene, the Man’s arch rival was the long haired bad biker club/ killer type, who always happened to be there at just that same time. At any other place these guys would have been at each others throats. But at Winchells, all seemed cool as could be. I use to think that some kind of weird force field was at work under the Bermuda Winchells triangle. I always wondered what the deal was with cops and donuts. But I didn’t ask any questions, I wasn't lookin' to get busted. Donut shops for cops were kinda like cop fly paper . Best leave things alone.

”Protect and Serve”. After years of being out of print, this famous painting has been re-published, and is now available in print again. First published in 1976, this open edition print measures 18” x 24” and is printed on a heavy duty acid free stock. These prints are hand signed in gold by the artist.
